Overview of the tools, techniques and existing good practices which local authorities can make use of to effectively tackle the challenges for sustainable urban management. Information, which builds on the knowledge gathered in nearly 70 European cities, emphasises the following key messages: 1. A house divided against itself cannot stand: competition within and between neighbouring cities and towns will not produce liveable urban areas. 2. Respect the local level: local tailor-made solutions that genuinely improve liveability can only be implemented by local authorities having enough legal and financial freedom. 3. Do it together: take responsibility and ensure that all stakeholders do the same (e.g. through the implementation of the ‘polluter pays’ principle) - create dialogue, respect, trust and a common language.
